It uses /usr/share/myspell/dicts/ (src/plugins/hunspell/hunspellclient.cpp), that is absent on Gentoo.

Is this still an issue with 5.15? I just noticed your RR was given a shipit so went to commit it, but it no longer applies since there's been some substantial hunspell plugin changes.

No, sonnet[hunspell] works fine here now.
I think USE=hunspell as default should work fine again

Thanks for the feedback. Fixed versions of sonnet are in the tree, and the default will switch to hunspell in 5.17.
