Requiring lsusb is optional. From the help of hp-setup you will find it only uses lsusb as fallback option if no serial number or USB ID is provided. There are a few options to configure the printer without lsusb.

With hp-probe you can find out the serial number, e.g.:

hp:/usb/Photosmart_6510_series?serial=CN1CA4303D05QB  HP Photosmart 6510 series

hp-setup -i CN1CA4303D05QB

From dmesg and sysfs you can obtain the bus and device number, e.g:

[ 4373.661639] usb 1-6: new high-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd

Bus and device number can be found here:
cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-6/uevent
BUSNUM=001
DEVNUM=009

hp-setup -i 001:009

Daniel,

I didn't realise this, do as you will with the bug :)
