Description tbartdev 2015-03-11 19:57:16 UTC
Booting 3.18.7 results in a general protection fault somewhere around where I'd expect "waiting for uevents to be processed". This is on a Thinkpad T61p. On a Thinkpad T410i the same kernel boots successfully.

Blacklisting different modules results in different incarnations of this GPF.

I'll attach a dmesg output.

This does not have too much priority (for me) as both 3.17 and also ~3.19.1 boot successfully, but I wanted to report it nevertheless as 3.18.7 shouldn't be stable considering this error.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.18.7 #latest stable as of this report
2. boot with
root=/dev/sda2 rfkill.master_switch_mode=0 vga=31B net.ifnames=0 raid=noautodetect modprobe.blacklist=nvidia s

Actual Results:
4 seconds later I get this GPF

Basically stable amd64 system here.

Comment 2 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2015-03-20 18:57:31 UTC
Can you test 3.18.9 and see if it's fixed there?

Would you have the time to bisect between you last working kernel and the failing kernel?
Comment 3 tbartdev 2015-03-23 17:18:15 UTC
I am currently on a pretty short time budget but I'll try to bisect.

However, 3.18.8 fixes it, so it's only one minor version to work on, should not be too time consuming. I'll keep you updated.
Comment 4 tbartdev 2015-03-23 18:03:44 UTC
Well, it won't let my bisect this way round and there are no kernel between 3.17.7 and the failing 3.18.7 in portage. Too much to bisect.
Trying with manually checking out somewhere closer before 3.18.7
Comment 5 tbartdev 2015-03-23 19:01:56 UTC
checked out
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git

git checkout v3.18.7

copied config over, make oldconfig && make -j3 && make -j3 modules && make modules_install

creates a 3.18.7 kernel that boots flawlessly.

I think it must be in the gentoo patchset, then.

How to bisect this?
Comment 6 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2015-06-17 00:25:17 UTC
You could start with a vanilla-sources-4.0.5 and apply the extra gentoo-sources patches one at a time.
Comment 7 tbartdev 2015-07-03 22:27:26 UTC
Is this really still sensible?
I mean from 3.18 on, everything is fine, so it seems to be fixed anyway..
Comment 8 Arisu Tachibana Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2017-02-04 07:44:10 UTC
closing for inactivity.

is this still a problem with more recent kernel ?

please open a new bug if the problem persist with a more recent kernel.

in the new bug start with a vanilla-sources and apply the extra gentoo-sources patches one at a time for finding where is the problem.
