The environment variable INFODIR is set in profile.env to "/usr/share/info:/usr/X11R6/info" by sys-apps/baselayout-1.9.4-r2 (via /etc/env.d/00basic) and x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r5 (via /etc/env.d/10xfree) on my system. There may be other packages that set INFODIR that I do not have installed. Is there any use for this variable? info does not use it, it uses INFOPATH instead. The directory /usr/share/info is correctly set in INFOPATH, and /usr/X11R6/info does not even exist.
