Description Ellison Marks 2015-02-25 01:32:56 UTC
After installing rust-bin, /opt/rust-bin-1.0.0_alpha2/bin contains

cargo rust-gdb-bin-1.0.0_alpha2 rustc-bin-1.0.0_alpha2 rustdoc-bin-1.0.0_alpha2

however, while rust-gdb, rustc and rustdoc are available in $PATH via symlinks in /usr/bin, cargo is not.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install dev-lang/rust-bin-1.0.0_alpha2
2. Try to run cargo --help
Actual Results:
command not found: cargo

Expected Results:
Rust's package manager

Usage:
    cargo <command> [<args>...]
    cargo [options]

Options:
    -h, --help Display this message
-V, --version Print version info and exit
    --list List installed commands
    -v, --verbose Use verbose output

Some common cargo commands are:
    build Compile the current project
    clean Remove the target directory
doc Build this project's and its dependencies' documentation
new Create a new cargo project
    run Build and execute src/main.rs
    test Run the tests
    bench Run the benchmarks
update Update dependencies listed in Cargo.lock

See 'cargo help <command>' for more information on a specific command.

A cursory check seems to indicate that running /opt/rust-bin-1.0.0_alpha2/bin/cargo seems to work as expected.

Comment 2 Jauhien Piatlicki (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-02-25 16:43:13 UTC
Basically, it should not put it into the path. Please, use dev-rust/cargo from the rust overlay.

Not binary version of Rust (dev-lang/rust) does not install cargo at all. So the only thing I would do here to avoid possible mess and confusion is removing of cargo binary from the rust-bin.
Comment 3 Jauhien Piatlicki (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-02-25 16:44:40 UTC
Oh, well, may be I will put it conditionally, using USE flag and then will block dev-rust/cargo on this package.
Comment 4 Ellison Marks 2015-02-25 19:42:50 UTC
Hmm, the only problem I have with using cargo from the overlay is it seems to depend on the rust-bin nightly, instead of the alpha2, so the only way to get a cargo working with the alpha2 seems to be to use the one it installs.
Comment 5 Jauhien Piatlicki (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-02-25 19:56:20 UTC
I advice you using nightly rust until beta is released.
