build.log for net-wireless/gnuradio-3.7.6.1 (~x86)

(Same problem occurs on both ~x86 and ~x86_64 hosts. Following info is from ~x86 host.)

gnuradio works fine until qt objects are used. Even then it builds fine within gnuradio-companion. But when executing, the following happens:

Generating: "/home/mm/gnuradio/tutorial_two_1.py"

Executing: "/home/mm/gnuradio/tutorial_two_1.py"

An "ldd /usr/lib/libgnuradio-qtgui-3.7.6.1.so.0.0.0" shows no missing libraries.

Below is "emerge --info" output and build log is attached.
Thanks very much.

I had the chance to speak with the gnuradio developers about this issue, and while we all agree that we aren't in love with how the qwt section of the build system works, we all agree that it looks like it should work properly.

Our current guess is that there is a problem specific to your system, as such, need a little info to confirm or deny.

If you could please provide the output of the following two commands as an attachment to this bug (should be small enough without compression):

find /lib* -exec ls -al {} \; | grep qwt
find /usr* -exec ls -al {} \; | grep qwt

Additionally, you could see if gentoo can resolve the problem manually (depends significantly on the issue. You can rebuild a few packages in order and it might just magically fix it:

emerge -1 qwt:5 -a (rebuild if installed, but don't need to install if it is missing)
emerge -1 qwt:6 (rebuild this no matter what)
emerge -1 gnuradio (rebuild this no matter what)

then test again. somehow the build system is finding headers for qwt:6 but not the libraries, so it's falling back to finding qwt:5 libs but building with qwt:6 headers (which is obviously why it is breaking). Not sure how this is possible, but with the requested find output from above we should be able to figure it out.

Comment 3 Mike Markowski 2015-02-19 17:14:46 UTC
I ran through the rebuilds but no change in running it. I've attached output of the find commands as well.

Running equery:

# equery d qwt
 * These packages depend on qwt:
dev-python/pyqwt-5.2.0-r1 (x11-libs/qwt:5[svg?])
net-wireless/gnuradio-3.7.6.1 (qt4 ? x11-libs/qwt:6)

I tried a reinstall of pyqwt to get it to pick up qwt:6, but ran into trouble:

# emerge pyqwt

> 'sip_include_dirs': [],

Wrt. dev-python/pyqwt, any chance it's one of the bugs like of bug 526524 ?

Also "ldd -r /usr/lib/libgnuradio-qtgui-3.7.6.1.so.0.0.0" would be more relevant, though given python is involved, it might give a long list of false positives.

Going by the build log, it seems that '-lqwt' from the ebuild confuses cmake - it detects qwt 6.1.2, but finds /usr/lib/libqwt.so, which is a symlink to qwt:5...
Comment 5 Mike Markowski 2015-02-20 16:38:59 UTC
Regarding dev-python/pyqwt, I tried changing its ebuild to use configure.py to create pyqtconfig rather than configure-ng.py which does not create pyqtconfig. But during configure I got:

[...]
Creating pyqtconfig.py...
 * Running qmake ...
Cannot find file: PyQt4.pro. [ !! ]

 * Running qmake has failed! (see above for details)
 * This shouldn't happen - please send a bug report to https://bugs.gentoo.org/

 * ERROR: dev-python/PyQt4-4.11.3::gentoo failed (configure phase):
 *   eqmake4 failed
[...]

so didn't pursue it further. Here is output of ldd:

You are missing /usr/lib/libqwt6.so. I have no idea how that is possible, I don't believe it's optional in any way, if qwt:6 is installed, that file should exist, but it doesn't. It looks like for some reason you have a version called /usr/lib/libqwt6-qt4.so

Sci team, do you have any idea what would cause this lib to change names like this?

comment 3, 4, and 5 appear to be a completely different bug. Please keep one issue per bug.

Yes, the recent addition of qt5 support made it necessary to change the naming. pkg-config --libs qwt6 should give the correct result.

older versions do not appear to have a pkg-config file at all, which I'm assuming means there is no upstream pkg-config file. This isn't just not portable across distros, this isn't even portable across different versions of gentoo.

I honestly have no clue how to overcome this aside from using a sane version of qwt:6
Comment 9 Rick Farina (Zero_Chaos) gentoo-dev 2015-02-20 18:37:24 UTC
x11-libs/qwt-6.1.2-r1 has added qt5 support and made both qt4 and qt5 optional. Although upstream has no pkg-config file, a pkg-config file has been added. As I have no idea how to deal with this kind of massive non-standard change, I've simply adjusted the deps to need a version of qwt that doesn't do this. Gnuradio should be buildable against <qwt-6.1.2-r1
Comment 10 Mike Markowski 2015-02-20 19:55:10 UTC
I recompiled after (locally) changing the gnuradio ebuild to use qwt:5. Now gnuradio works with qt objects!

I realize this doesn't solve the deeper issue, but I'm at least able to get going with gnuradio. Many thanks! I also look forward to learning more about the longterm solution.

Meant to say "<x11-libs/qwt-6.1.2-r1" (rather than qwt:5)...

I'm glad things are working for you for the moment so you can enjoy gnuradio.

thanks to the help of jlec on irc, we now have a solution that seems to work for me locally. I have officially sent it to the gnuradio team who will hopefully merge it some time in the next 24 hours, at which time I'll commit the patch and fixes to gentoo. For now, if you don't use qwt-6.1.2-r1 things should work, if all goes smoothly, tomorrow even that will work properly.
Comment 13 Rick Farina (Zero_Chaos) gentoo-dev 2015-02-21 04:20:40 UTC
Fix accepted upstream for 9999 version and I dropped the patch into our 3.7.6.1.

thanks for the report, and even more so for helping debug.
Comment 14 Mike Markowski 2015-02-21 20:31:14 UTC
You're welcome, Rick, and glad to help as much as I was able - not too much, really! Just started it up with the new ebuild and all is well. Thanks very much, and now back to learning how to use gnuradio...
