backtrace.log

Hi,

[I know, ==dev-qt/qt-creator-3.2.2 isn't keyworded at all on ia64. But qt-creator-2.8.1 wasn't either, although I'm daily using it without a problem]

While attempting to emerge ==dev-qt/qt-creator-3.2.2, /usr/bin/ld segfaults in allocate_fptr, in file elf64-ia64.c, at line 2726 (qt-creator build.log also reports the failure of the assertion at line 2723):

2722              BFD_ASSERT ((h->root.type == bfd_link_hash_defined)
2723                          || (h->root.type == bfd_link_hash_defweak));
2724
2725              if (!bfd_elf_link_record_local_dynamic_symbol
2726                    (x->info, h->root.u.def.section->owner,
2727                     global_sym_index (h)))

Let me know if I can help further,

    Émeric

Can you positively rule out that it may have simply run out of memory? Perhaps remove -pipe from C*FLAGS.

Removing -pipe from C*FLAGS didn't help and I'm not running out of memory (BTW, there's plenty of memory on this ia64 system: 24GB).

While not directly related, this and bug #541828 seem to imply that /usr/bin/ld is actually in a pretty bad shape on ia64.

i just built it dev-qt/qt-creator-3.2.2 on my system with:
  sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r3
  sys-devel/gcc-4.7.4
i also used your CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS/LDFLAGS.

is this still an issue for you ? if so, does binutils-2.25.1 fair better ?

You're absolutely right, I've also just built qt-creator-3.2.2 with the same binutils and gcc than you. However qt-creator-3.2.2 is badly failing at opening my projects but this is another story [1].

Back to this problem: since current ia64 stable binutils is still 2.24-r3 and this issue disappears, does it mean it was in fact caused by interactions with other toolchain components rather than binutils itself? I've just noticed e.g. that I was using gcc 4.7.3 at the time, whereas gcc 4.7.4 is now ia64 stable. for the sake of completeness, I'll post updated emerge --info output.

binutils shouldn't segfault, even if it was bad interaction with other versions. if we can't reproduce though, we can't track it down :(.

if you do hit it again, please re-open, and i'll try to poke it sooner.
