No, the hard dependency on freetype is for generating unicode.pf2 from unifont.pcf.gz. This is necessary for using the "gfxterm" module. It's only a build-time dependency; you may remove freetype after grub has been built. Is installing freetype causing some problem for you? It's not a very "heavy" dependency.
Not really a big problem, however I would like too keep my server from having too much unnecessary clutter. Removing freetype after installing will always pull freetype back in when running update world. At the moment I don't have freetype installed and grub works just fine (well, I'm not using gfxmode for a server install). I think it would be nice to have some kind of "minimal" grub install for only using text mode. Maybe have a "gfxmode" or "textmode" use flag?
Fair enough. I'll look into making it optional again.
