Description Stefan Langenmaier 2015-01-23 04:18:53 UTC
I have the problem on two different machines. The kernel seems to start normally. It get asked to enter my password for the root filesystem. It press "enter" and now normally the boot would continue from the disk, but instead it just waits there.

On one computer, I upgraded from gentoo-sources-3.14.14 to gentoo-sources-3.17.7 with "make oldconfig". In the config for 3.14 the CONFIG_SYSVIPC is enabled and the system boots without a problem. The 3.17 kernel with basically the same configuration boots, but waits after I entered the password indefinitely.

At first I thought it might be related to cryptsetup or some other configuration. But I did a fresh install of Gentoo on another system. Basically the same setup. The root filesystem is encrypted. At the start I have to enter the password. There I reduced the problem to the CONFIG_SYSVIPC option in the kernel. If it is activated the boot process "hangs" (the kernel is still active like normal, I can Ctrl+Alt+Del and all the characters I type are displayed, but it does not print anything that the filesystem is mounted and hence no init system starts) after I enter the password. When I deactivate the option, I can start the kernel, enter my password, the partition gets mounted and the systems starts.

I build and install the kernel and initramfs with genkernel-next.
The emerge --info is from the new system.

There is no error message after I enter the password. So I'm a little bit lost. How can I get more information on this?

General question: Is this option necessary? Gnome 3 seems to start just fine without it. What impact has it on my applications?
