dev-python/python-daemon-2.0.3 doesn't play well with any(!) version of setuptools in the tree.
Stepping back to dev-python/python-daemon-2.0.1 (or dev-python/python-daemon-2.0.2 which is not in the tree,yet, solves the problem)
