Description Jimi Thompson 2004-06-10 14:49:01 UTC
I've got an old Compaq Deskpro that I've tried a 3COM 3C509 in which failed to detect. I've tried a SMC card, but I'm not sure which once since it's still in the machine. I've tried a RealTek card which failed to detect. I tried Compaq's branded Intel NIC as well. I'd think that the problem was with the hardware except for the fact that I've been able to load FreeBSD and Mandrake on the exactly the same hardware and they are to detect the NIC and configure it each time.

Your distro looks interesting it, but I really don't want to have to configure everything by hand when I load up a new machine, so I thought I'd tell you that your network card detection process, at least with this motherboard, is really really broken.

If FreeBSD and Mandrake were having issues with the same hardware, I'd be inclined to suspect the hardware. However, neither one is.

Gentoo has hardware detection? That's news to me.
What exactly did you try? Is this a problem with the boot CD, or what?
What happens when you load the 3c509 kernel module?

have you tried a 2004.1 or 2004.0 livecd?
Comment 4 John Davis (zhen) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-14 09:01:48 UTC
okay, if you were using an early 2004 livecd, then your problems are explained. we had some major issues with livecds and modules, but they should be fixed in 2004.2. Please try a 2004.2 test livecd at http://dev.gentoo.org/~wolf31o2/releng and reopen the bug if your problem still persists.

Missing an Email -
The boot CD tries to detect the hardware and returns an error message "No Network Device Detected". Perhaps I am misinterpreting this, but it occurs immediately after a status bar that says it's automatically configuring devices. If it's NOT doing hardware detection, it certainly gives the appearance of it.

When I try to load the modules by hand I get error messages stating that the device is not present. When I try to probe the device manually, I get additional error messages that indicate that the driver in question is not able to communicate with the device.

HTH,

Jimi

looks like you are trying to load a module for a device that you don't have, or the device is broken

I only added the email because the bug thread didn't make sense without it. Anyone coming along later would be very confused!

The new CD ROM seems to have solved the problem.
