Surely one doesnt want to downgrade??  emerge -pu world also wants to bring in 
1.7.9-r1 even after --clean rsync.  It's been this way for past 2 days I 
believe.

the new one was accidentally unmasked, and then we remasked it when it was
caught.  this is no error, portage is doing what it is supposed to.
