Description Chris 2014-12-11 17:12:51 UTC
Hi. I have been trying all manner of permutations to increase the amount of vram for my guest OS (happens to be Windows7). No matter what I do, it tells me there is only 16M. I have to have at least 64M to run a very important application.

Some digging has shown that I can pass a "-global" parameter to the qxl vga driver to do this, specifically: "-global qxl-vga.vram_size". I also came across a similar reference: "-global qxl-vga.ram_size". As stated in my forum post, I'm not entirely sure what the difference there is, but the vram option comes from comments in the qemu source code, so I' pretty sure it is legit. It is just being ignored. Doesn't matter what values I put in each (though I have been making efforts to keep it multiples of 64MB).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open a terminal
2.Type: qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -cpu host -vga qxl -global qxl-vga.ram_size=67108864 -global qxl-vga.vram_size=33554422 -smp cpus=2 -soundhw hda -drive file=/vm/My-Box-WIN,if=virtio -usb -cdrom /home/grooveman/win7_64.iso -net tap,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no -net nic,model=virtio -m 16G -monitor stdio -name MY-Box-WIN -spice streaming-video=all,agent-mouse=on,disable-ticketing,port=5930
3. spicec -h 127.0.0.1 -p5930 --color-depth 32
4. Log into windows
5. Right click the desktop, and choose Screen Resolution, then Advanced
6. Read what it tells you regarding memory. I always get: 16M, n/a, n/a, n/a.
Actual Results:
I always get: 16M, n/a, n/a, n/a.

Expected Results:
Expected to get the amount of memory passed to the qemu executable and the qxl driver

Comment 1 Chris 2014-12-18 12:41:52 UTC
This behavior has not changed when upgrading to qemu-2.2.0. I continue to try different methods of increasing video ram, but it never works.

I have tried manipulating all of these:

qxl.vram64_size_mb=uint32
qxl.vram_size_mb=uint32
qxl.ram_size_mb=uint32
qxl.vram_size=uint32
qxl.ram_size=uint32

During my testing, I have removed the video card from the device manager in my virtual machine, and allowed it to reinstall. now all video ram measurements show n/a. The 16mb has disappeared. Perhaps it was a relic from switching from standard vga to the qxl driver? I suspect that it was never an accurate report for my qxl implementation.

it's not clear this is a bug in qemu vs passing in the right flags. please post your queries to the qemu discuss list and let us know:
