Description Philippe Trottier (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-06 08:34:13 UTC
Because of the enoumous amount of driver partitions on Apple's drives and the fact that many new machines are now SATA (max of 15 partitions)... lvm2 is maybe the only escape route left, to have these features:

-1 Installed OSX
-1 swap
-2 root (one for daily use , one for testing new Gentoo releases)
-1 Separate home (so you don't need to move stuff around when updrading)
-1 boot to keep all the kernels around a central place
-1 bootstrap for Newworld

That's 7 partitions, then add all the Apple junk and 128M of free space just in case mister OSX wants some extra drivers. and you are way over 15.

with lvm it allows you to keep sane.

Example with lvm2:
===================================
/dev/hda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1 ( 31.5k) Partition map

/dev/hda3 Apple_Driver43 Macintosh 56 @ 120 ( 28.0k) Driver 4.3

Comment 1 Philippe Trottier (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-06 08:36:26 UTC
Should I create a separate bug for PPC64 ?
Comment 2 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-06 11:58:55 UTC
well, hold off on the separate bug for now -- let's see what the two teams make of the request first.
Comment 3 Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-19 12:57:51 UTC
It's possible to add this to the livecd, but we are probably unable to test reliably (lacking systems we can repartition).

I can have a look for 2004.3.
Comment 4 Philippe Trottier (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-20 01:34:32 UTC
For what it's worth I have both of my ppc since(2004.1) and ppc64(since2004.2) system running lvm2, swap and home directory are on lvm2.
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-09 08:22:10 UTC
Actually, we should be doing this for all arches to have proper support.
Comment 6 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-09 12:16:03 UTC
We have been including lvm2 in the template for a while. Is there any reason why it isn't on the 2004.2 release?
Comment 7 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-15 23:59:50 UTC
This is definitely in the x86 spec files.

Pieter: if you can add this to the PPC release, we can consider this one RESOLVED.
Comment 8 Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-21 12:43:04 UTC
verified for 2004.3
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:39 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
