Description René Marten 2004-06-06 03:41:22 UTC
After upgrading GCC to 3.4.0 and rebuilding some stuff to test if it is ready to use yet.
Most things especially the kde stuff compiled fine.
So I desicded to start kde to see if all things are working korrectly.
But in the start process of kde I get the message that kcminit has crached.
I did a bt in gdb and I got this:

Cannot access memory at address 0xc0000000

Here is the output of kde-config

Qt: 3.3.2
KDE: 3.2.2
kde-config: 1.0

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Upgrade to GCC 3.4.0-r6
2.re-emerge some packages like X, QT, kdelibs, kdebase
3.

Comment 1 René Marten 2004-06-13 02:50:31 UTC
Updated kde to 3.2.3 but no luck.
But now it seems to work.
I think its because of rebuilding X.org 2 days ago.
Now it seems to work.
Comment 2 Robin Smidsrød 2004-08-13 07:33:25 UTC
I still have this problem, but I haven't rebuilt my xfree after upgrading to gcc 3.4.1. I'll try this later and see if it helps.

Sidenote: What's the correct upgrade path from gcc 3.3.x to gcc 3.4.1?

Comment 4 René Marten 2004-08-13 08:08:58 UTC
@Robin Smidsrød:

/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.1 (gcc 3.4.1)

No problem after rebuilding X and also no problem with kde 3.3 beta 2
But I'm using xorg not xfree so I don't know if this helps when using xfree too.
So I can only say that rebuilding xorg fixed it for me.

same here---kcminit crashes. unfortunately, not much more information on the panel. rest works fine. its just a nuisance, not a big deal.

so, I am now thinking about rebuilding xorg/x11, too---except that my system somehow ended up with a working mix of these two. I seem to run xorg, but some virtual stuff (virtual/x11, though this comes from an xorg package) from the x1--base/xfree. I guess these are all just growing pains in the process of switching from xfree to xorg, that will go away by themselves.

Comment 6 Richard Schreyer 2004-10-12 09:20:35 UTC
I'm also seeing KCMInit crash, although this is with gcc 3.3.4, so it may be a different issue. If the rest of you could run this test 'kcminit --list' lists all of the individual modules that it starts. I found that I could run through this list, item by item (kcminit mouse, kcminit energy, etc), and found that it was 'kgamma' that was causing the crash.

My Control Center was also dying when switching to the Display view, which I've also traced to something in usr/kde/3.3/lib/kde3/kcm_kgamma.so.

I re-emerged kdegraphics (which installs kgamma.so), with +debug nostrip, and the crash no longer occurs, and I get a properly functioning gamma tab in my Display controls.

sounds like some strange issue that hopefully has cleared itself up now.
