Description imagination 2004-06-06 03:26:38 UTC
In contrast to 2004.0 adsl-setup fails
for 2004.1.A prior 'modprobe 8139too' does not help,
adsl-setup runs in its TIMEOUT.
Loading of any of the ppp* modules fails.
Comment 1 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-06 10:08:16 UTC
Could you be a bit more specific on where it fails and what errors it may be giving? I definitely want to get this resolved before the next release.

To be more specific not adsl-setup but adsl-start fails
because of '.... TIMED OUT':
After booting (with Network device: eth0 detected)
I did an obviously successful 'modprobe 8139too'
Then 'adsl-setup' (specifying exactly the same data
as with 2004.0), strange enough, proposes an eth1.
I insisted on eth0 and adsl-setup finishes without
error message.
'adsl-start' fails to start with the above message.
'ifconfig' shows only lo. 'ifconfig eth0 up'
with a first line 'Link encap: UNSPEC' so (after
'ifconfig eth0 down') I tried 'ifconfig eth1 up'.
This time I get the correct first line
'Link encap: Ethernet'. But another adsl-setup
specifying eth1 fails also as 'adsl-start' does
not connect.
'ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net' lists
a couple of ppp_*.o and a pppoe.o drivers, but
any modprobe of one of them fails because of
'unresolved symbols'.

Would you try the CD at http://dev.gentoo.org/~wolf31o2/releng and see if that resolves your problem?

Thanks

With this gentoo-2004.2-test3.iso there was no
problem at all with 'adsl-start'. The connection
was made after the first '.' towards timeout.
Could you explain what was going on and what caused
the problem?
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-07 10:35:31 UTC
I'll be honest. I don't have a clue. I wasn't part of the 2004.1 release at all. In fact, I have just started as the QA Manager for Gentoo releases. I'm glad to see that it works on the new CDs, since those will be the base for the next LiveCD release.

I'm going to mark this as RESOLVED, since we've resolved it for the next release.

Thanks for the bug report.
