Description Jeff 2014-11-30 08:06:04 UTC
NTOP service refuses to start when "--skip-version-check" is passed via NTOP_OPTS line in "/etc/conf.d/ntop"
Failure Examples:
NTOP_OPTS="-u ntop -P /var/lib/ntop -i lo,eno1 --skip-version-check"
NTOP_OPTS="-u ntop -P /var/lib/ntop -i lo,eno1 --skip-version-check"

When "--skip-version-check" is removed from "/etc/conf.d/ntop", NTOP service will start up via "service ntop start" and when set to start up via "rc-update add ntop default".

When tested via command line using "ntop -t6 --skip-version-check", the NTOP service will start and "background" itself.

Also, by hacking the "etc/init.d/ntop" file to add '--skip-version-check' to the start() function, I could reproduce the same failure as having 'skip-version-check' added to NTOP-OPTS in "/etc/conf.d/ntop"

I suspect the issue could be a problem passing NTOP options that have an embedded '-' (hyphen) in them since the '--w3c' option can be passed to NTOP and not cause a startup failure (no error).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge ntop and set an admin password
2. Type "ntop --help" to see the correct syntax for options
3. Edit "/etc/conf.d/ntop" and add '--skip-version-check' (without quotes)
4. Attempt to start NTOP using "service ntop start" (using OpenRC here)
5. NTOP should fail to start

Maybe you should try giving it an argument.

`ntop --skip-version-check yes' worked fine. Other arguments to do.

Anyway, I don't think it's anything Gentoo is doing to ntop, so please report this upstream instead.

to do => do too.
Comment 3 Jeff 2014-11-30 19:46:01 UTC
I tried the suggested workaround: adding an argument to "--skip-version-check yes" in "/etc/conf.d/ntop"

NTOP does start without error with this workaround in place, but it does not prevent NTOP from "calling home" according to "iftop" output on my firewall (2-way data exchange is still seen).

According to "/usr/share/ntop/html/ntop.html", lines 1404-1436 (per 'vim'), the "--skip-version-check" run-time (NTOP's word) option is supposed to stop NTOP from "calling home". I can confirm the command-line options for NTOP DO WORK CORRECTLY (as shown by the program using "ntop --help"). I still insist the error is in how Gentoo OpenRC passes options to NTOP when starting it.

Possible workaround: NTOP has various 'checkversion' functions included in it's "globals-core.h" file. I am not a C/C++ programmer. Perhaps there is a way to set/clear the 'checkversion' or 'reportNtopVersionCheck' functions in the NTOP source code when the NTOP package is emerged?

My own interim workaround to block NTOP from "calling home": I blocked outbound communication to the target website via local DNS and firewall rules; it works until the IP address in the DNS record for "kpn.ntop.org" is updated. I add an entry to "/etc/hosts" to point "kpn.ntop.org" to the loopback address. Now I have complete control over NTOP's "calling home" behavior.

BTW if I read "http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/OpenRC" correctly, the files in "/etc/conf.d" are the responsibility of the Gentoo project as they are used by OpenRC (it's elements, sub-elements, and supporting programs); upstream programs do not use the files in "/etc/conf.d" directly AFAIK.

Upstream does own the command-line options to their own programs, but upstream is not responsible for how an external program calls or provides options to a program owned by upstream. Analogy: If you mistype options at the command-line when starting a program, who is at fault? You "the user" or upstream?

Thus, I respectfully disagree with the request to report this issue as a bug to upstream. Furthermore, I respectfully disagree that this matter has been resolved.

Notice the call in "main.c:640" saying "Get the freshest ntop from http://www.ntop.org". There is a corresponding packet exchange in "iftop" when this occurs.
