Shouldn't bootsplash provide a bootanim script in future that animations can be used in themes? Or is fbmngplay called directly?

Actually, Gentoo's bootsplash does provide the bootanim script (since 0.6.1). You can play with it if you want, but please take in mind that bootanims are not yet officially supported in our bootsplash (they should be added soon, though).
