whenever called, modules-update outputs an erroneous file (--assume-kernel=<foo>) in the current working directory.

ZhEN, I'm reopening this because I want to make sure it's fixed with the new baselayout dep on module-init-tools-3.0-r2.  Could you verify?

Ok, now that I understand the root cause, this problem is fixed
