When the radeon kernel module is loaded, the screen wents black and the system freezes in a very short time afterwards. I have to start the kernel with rc_coldplug=NO to prevent udev to load the module in the boot process. Afterwards I can load any module manually with modprobe without any problems except radeon. The screen wents immediately black when the module is loaded and the machine seems not to respond anymore. However, from a different machine I can still ping it and open a shell with ssh, but it take ~1 min to get the prompt for the password and another minute to have at least a prompt on the console. It is then possible to run some simple commands (typing is also delayed), but finally the machine does not able to start any command anymore (although is is still possible to ping it). It is also no longer possible to shut it down properly, because the system freezes somewhere inbetween. It is also not possible to remove the radeon module again, modprobe claims it is in use. This happens actually for all kernels since 3.13.0, 3.12.31 is currently the last one working properly for me. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. You can see the messages from loading the radeon driver, the entries when the remote shell was opened, when shutdown was invoked from that remote shell and how the system froze performing the shutdown. top from the remote shell reports the processes ksoftirq/3, ksoftirq/5, kworker/3, kworker/5 and sshd claiming between 30% and 100% of the cpu in changing sequence.
Can you try booting with radeon.dpm=0, let me know the results and attach the dmesg
Created attachment 387730 [details] dmesg with radeon.dmp=0 The dmesg output loading the radeon driver with dpm=0 with modprobe. Actually with this setting the machine works properly. Boot process is fine with the setting as kernel parameter for gentoo-3.16.5. also.
I'm going to close this as 'fixed' since we identified a workaround. Please take this upstream if you want to take this any further. You can see the url for the upstream kernel bug in the URL: section above.
