Description Eric VanWyk 2004-05-31 06:51:54 UTC
Background: I have used distcc before and really appreciated the speed boost. However, I had to know who was volunteering clock cycles. We have a large number of laptops that I would like to use for distcc (300ish), but they are only on part of the time, and they all have dynamic IPs.

Proposal: A central server that knows who is available to compile at each moment. When a new laptop is imaged, this would tell everyone else that she is available as well.

Example: Ten early adopters already have eachother in their DISTCC_HOSTS variable. Then Sally wants to join in - Adding sally to 10 computers by hand is bad. Adding Sally, Susie and Raphael to 220 computers is worse. Also, if Sally is only on 30% of the time, do we want her in everyone's list?

Thank You for your consideration - if we can get this working, I may be able to convert the college to Gentoo from Red Hat.
