The Printing HOWTO leaves out some important details about the crappy but commonplace HP Deskjet 710/712C, 720/722C, 820Cse/Cxi, 1000Cse/Cxi series printers. 1. They don't recognize ASCII, so the command "cat test.txt > /dev/lp0" in Code Listing 2.7 is not a useful test. I suggest adding a note about these printers. 2. The appropriate Foomatic driver (pnm2pcl) is found correctly using the method shown in Code Listing 4.2, but it doesn't mention that a Ghostscript pnm2pcl driver has to be installed separately. I suggest at least adding a warning that a Ghostscript driver may need to emerged separately. Yes, these details can be found elsewhere by following the links provided, but I wasted an hour or so doing it, and it's easy to remedy. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
You don't happen to have a good URL for these printers do you? I'm not going to go list all printers that do and don't immediately work. Is this common for all printers using the pnm2pcl driver?
Correction: driver name is actually "pnm2ppa" Web page: http://pnm2ppa.sourceforge.net/ Issues described apply to all printers using this driver.
I've added a note or two about these nasty PPA-based printers :)
