Why start cupsd indeed? You should only need to define your cups server in /etc/cups/client.conf and lp tools will connect to your server. That's how I use it but I am definitely not a cups guru. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I think it's because the local CUPS daemon connects to the remote CUPS daemon. I don't know, I don't use any printing service at all.
But why run cupsd on all clients? It's useless IMHO I defined my cups server in /etc/cups/client.conf and that's it
Can anyone from the samba or printing teams explain why users are told to start cupsd on all clients? Thanks.
xavier is right, it is not needed.
Thanks for confirming Heinrich. I'll make the guide consistent with out printing-howto. i.e. clients need only to have the server defined in /etc/cups/client.conf
what's the status of this?
Still on my ToDo list, near the top ;-) It should not take too long. Thanks for your ping.
Created attachment 37806 [details, diff] Rewrite of cups client config This is a rewrite of the cups client config part. No need to start cupsd on clients, just define the server, show list of printers, define default one, print something. Please review this patch. Thanks.
No one seems to be complaining about this, I'll go ahead. It works nicely for me. Committed.
