Description Ulrar 2014-09-18 10:04:57 UTC
When emerging weechat with the guile useflag, guile 1.8 is pulled as a dependency, but weechat requires guile 2 for that plugin (which is hard masked).
Comment 1 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-09-18 10:14:11 UTC
1) Which version of net-irc/weechat is that?
2) Please post your `emerge --info net-irc/weechat' output in a comment.
Comment 2 Ulrar 2014-09-18 11:10:06 UTC
1) It's version 0.4.3-r1, the last in portage as of now. Same dependency for the 1.0 however, but there doesn't seem to be an ebuild for it yet.
guile 2 is listed as a dependency for weechat on the official website, confirmed on their irc channel.

2)

Portage 2.2.8-r1 (default/linux/amd64/13.0, gcc-4.6.3, glibc-2.19-r1, 3.10.7-gentoo-r1-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 x86_64)

Comment 3 Ulrar 2014-09-19 15:31:07 UTC
Investigated more, weechat currently uses a feature only available since guile-2.0.4 (released in early 2012, pretty old already), which doesn't exist in portage. The developer is looking into working around that to make it work with the only guile-2.0.0 available in portage.
Comment 4 Arne Babenhauserheide 2014-10-27 16:57:09 UTC
Why not instead getting guile 2.0.11 from the lisp overlay? Guile 2.0.0 is over 3 years old (16.02.2011).
Comment 5 Ulrar 2014-10-27 17:03:51 UTC
Yeah, gentoo should have a recent guile available, but that's not the issue here. weechat should work fine with guile-2.0.0, but it doesn't depend on it in portage. guile-2 is masked, so you end up pulling guile-1.8, which is reaaaaaaaaly old and doesn't work with weechat.
Comment 6 Arne Babenhauserheide 2014-10-28 18:14:28 UTC
so the dev adjusted weechat to not use the feature of 2.0.4 you noted in comment #3?
Comment 7 Ulrar 2015-05-28 13:59:24 UTC
Sorry for the delay, forgot about this.
Yes, weechat should now work with guile 2 in portage.

I see that the ebuilds recently added guile:12 as a dependency, which doesn't and won't ever work. I should use guile:2 as a dependency, I believe.
Comment 8 Ulrar 2015-08-06 08:40:15 UTC
Could someone take a look at this ? Having to maintain a local overlay just because there is a :12 in portage's ebuild isn't ideal.
Comment 9 Ulrar 2016-05-25 15:26:53 UTC
Hi,

That's still open, and still a problem.
I understand I'm probably the only one actually using guile with weechat, but re-adding the :2 that was removed for some reason would be greatly greatly appreciated.

As mentioned, weechat hasn't been compatible with guile 1 for literally years, it makes no sense to depend on it. I talked to the developer and he even made it compatible with guile 2.0.0 for this last year, which strangely appears to be the only version available in portage, so depending on it would result in successful builds, which isn't the case currently.

Thanks

Fixed in the tree.
