Description jospezial 2014-09-18 00:25:38 UTC
It started in the beginning of 2014 I think.
Every time when print the payment details of an bought ebay article with firefox, the printed characters are distorted and nearly unreadable.

It makes no difference in choose of the printer or printer driver.
Even printing to a file (pdf or ps) brings the same.
I have this on two Gentoo computers with a lot versions of cups and firefox.
I had this with firefox nightly builds too.

Doing the same with debian or ubuntu works fine.

Please have a look at the attached scans.

b.g.o. printout to file (pdf)

Even if I print this page here to file (pdf) in firefox then you see the title line is not good.

It is not related to specific printer.
Comment 5 jospezial 2014-10-17 00:22:11 UTC
Still the same with net-print/cups-2.0.0-r2 .
The bug somehow depends on the font or font size and style used on a page.
Comment 6 Matthias Maier gentoo-dev 2014-10-17 05:47:54 UTC
Given the fact that the b.g.o output (in the pdf) looks good except for headers this is very likely a font issue on your side.

Please attach the output of an $ emerge --info, a list of all fonts installed (e.g. $ eix -I -c -C media-fonts), and the output of $ eselect fontconfig list.

Please disable bitmaps fonts, so that you end up with
  [3]   10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf
  [57]  70-no-bitmaps.conf *
  [58]  70-yes-bitmaps.conf

and (temporarily) disable all local modifications under /etc/fonts/local.conf and $HOME by unsetting
  [29]  50-user.conf
  [30]  51-local.conf

After that, restart the desktop environment and try again. It should now pick up a true type replacement for the fonts in question that printout nicely.

You might also want to enable a specific font family as default sans serif/serif/monospace provider, e.g.
  [31]  57-dejavu-sans-mono.conf *
  [32]  57-dejavu-sans.conf *
  [33]  57-dejavu-serif.conf *
(There are multiple alternatives around media-fonts/droid or media-fonts/ubuntu-font-family, etc.)

Ok. I did what you told me.
/etc/fonts/local.conf does not exist on my system.
But I found:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 joerg joerg 41 22. Okt 2013  /home/joerg/.fonts.conf -> /home/joerg/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
and
-rw-r--r-- 1 joerg joerg 530 26. Apr 2013  /home/joerg/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf

cat /home/joerg/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="rgba">
   <const>none</const>
  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">

  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">

  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
   <bool>true</bool>
  </edit>
 </match>
 <dir>~/.fonts</dir>
</fontconfig>

I did not create that files by hand.

Now the printout works as it should.
I was angry about that problem for a long time.
I can't remember that I ever made changes with eselect fontconfig but it could be related to Google Earth were I had fonts missing/not displayed corectly.

There should be a bitmap fonts related hint in http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Fontconfig for the problem I had.

I have the feeling, firefox now uses a different but good readable font for its menu bar. The same for lxpanel.

I will consider installing the Font family alternatives if I need to.

Thank you very much!
Comment 10 Matthias Maier gentoo-dev 2014-10-18 22:41:32 UTC
You're welcome.

Well, font configuration can be a tricky endeavor...

Regarding a possible wiki entry: The wiki is a community project, so feel free to add a small section explaining that ugly/blocky text might be related to bitmap fonts accidentally being used. :-)
