Comment 2 Juergen Rose 2014-08-10 14:39:15 UTC
I hit the error on the next system. On the new system ("wildcat") I could use successfully the recipe of Comment 9 of Bug 512284. I.e., I did:

1st: added -pdf to sci-mathematics/sage-doc in /etc/portage/package.use
2nd: 'emerge -v1 sage-notebook'
3rd: 'emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y sage'

On the first system (lynx2) it did not work. The third step fails with:
...

A subsequent 'MAKEOPTS=-j1 emerge -v1 sage-doc' was successful.
Comment 4 François Bissey 2015-03-04 20:17:23 UTC
Of late building documentation in parallel has been fragile on some systems. Of course I now recommend people to use sage-doc-bin by default.
