Description Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-07-31 08:00:27 UTC
I use enigmail installed through the crypt useflag of mail-client/thunderbird.

I start thunderbird through the gnome-shell and it worked fine until the stabilization and upgrade to gnome-3.12. Since this upgrade, enigmail won't work when thunderbird is started from the gnome-shell. If thunderbird is started from command line it does work.

There error is very strange: Whenever a signing is supposed to happen, Thunderbird two dialogues on top of each other, only the top one being visible. The dialog is empty and has no message in it. I suspect that the covered dialogue below is just some status message saying "encrypting now". Clicking on OK on the top dialog kills both dialogues and takes me back to composition. Clearly signing failed.
I used the "View Console" command to show the enigmail console, but there are no errors there. It shows what appears to be a correct call to gpg for each try to sign.

And again: Everything works fine if Thunderbird is started from a normal terminal, not the gnome-shell. It may be some environment issue?

Reproducible: Always

What does occur when launching it from Alt+F2 gnome-shell dialog?
Comment 3 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-08-04 11:09:40 UTC
I now think my profile was broken.

After experimenting more I got to a state where it would not work regardless of the startup method. Then I followed this advice from the ebuild:

elog "If you are experience problems with plugins please issue the"
        elog "following command : rm \${HOME}/.thunderbird/*/extensions.sqlite ,"
        elog "then restart thunderbird"

This made Thunderbird create a new profile (I don't know if this is intended??). Then I thought I might as well try that, and now with a new profile everything works as expected.

Oh, I also switched to manually installed enigmail instead of crypt useflag at some point.

Sorry, I can't reproduce this anymore.
