I did not find anything about removing or disabling tests in changelog or ebuilds. e2fsprogs-1.42.10.tar.gz has tests:
$ ls tests/|wc -l
162

Also ebuilds still have workarounds for running test, see bug #516972

So i assume some version bump was done incorrectly and running tests was not verified.

ext4 file system is default, so i definitely want to run tests for sys-fs/e2fsprogs package, please keep them working.

same issue as seen in bug 517214, except this only led to the tests not running
