The file from gentoo-vdr-scripts depends on the command "pidof". The command "pidof" was provided by the sysvinit until version sys-apps/sysvinit-2.88-r6 (see also the elog message from the sysvinit ebuild). As of version 3.3.9 the command is provided by the ebuild >=sys-process/procps-3.3.9 . Florian, as i suggest in comment [1] sys-process/procps-3.3.9 is part of your system profil take a look in http://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/dependencies/index.html#implicit-system-dependency how to handle system own packages I think something goes wrong as you switched to the latest system profile there was a block in sysvinit / procps maybe you did not know how to resolve this block an blocked the update of sysvinit in package.mask maybe... anyway. to fix this: remove the mask emerge sysvinit -uO // to upgrade sysvinit emerge procps // to install the missing system package this will fix your local problem
