i'd bet that you don't have enough memory or swap. MySQL is known for needing large amounts of it to compile properly (on the order of 1GB+ of memory+swap in some cases). Alternatively try CFLAGS="-mcpu=c3 -pipe" as that should also take the requirements down some.
bug #50323 came from the same reporter, same symptom. It must be low/bad memory/swap thing.
do you have enough ram/swap ? did you try memtest86 ?
Adding more swap space resulted in clean compile. Not an bug.
