Starting up gnome 2.6 causes the "Gnome Session Deamon could not start. Things like themes, backgrounds and sounds might not work." error to appear every time. There are no themes (icons) after the error. Going into "themes" however fixes the issue until the next login. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start up gnome 2.6 2. 3. Actual Results: Themes don't work Expected Results: Themes should work Portage 2.0.50-r6 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.2-r9, 2.6.3-gentoo-r1) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.3-gentoo-r1 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.4.10 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.58-r1 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.itdnet.net/gentoo/ http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.fr.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib apm arts avi berkdb bonobo cdr crypt cups dvd encode esd foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gpm gtk gtk2 imlib java jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline samba sdl slang spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex truetype x86 xml2 xmms xv zlib"
I can confirm this bug. I experience the exact same behaviour. Christian
I can confirm that this happens for me too. Although the wording of the error message is "Gnome Settings Deamon could not start". Roy
dunno this should be auto started by your session ... does this happen for new users too ?
Killing the session, reemerging all the theme engines and dependancies and relloging in and out fixed the issue.
