All things are not equal. $ eselect opencl listAvailable OpenCL implementations: [1] intel * Can you get it to install under an alternate listing, at all
I will look into getting an alternate listing installed. My understanding is that an OpenCL stack consists of three parts: a set of header files, an installable client driver loader, and the client drivers themselves. NVIDIA only supports OpenCL 1.1 and as such their ICD loader does not expose any OpenCL 1.2 functions. clCreateSubDevices appears to be one of these OpenCL 1.2 functions. However, the header files provided by: app-admin/eselect-opencl-1.1.0-r2 do contain definitions for OpenCL 1.2 functions. It therefore looks to me as if pyopencl is assuming the availability of OpenCL 1.2 functions (on account of the header files prototyping them) when the ICD loader does not know of their existence. Possible reassign to the eselect-opencl maintainers?
I switched to the mesa OpenCL driver loader and re-emerged pyopencl. The result was the same. Next I tried removing the header files in /usr/include/CL and replacing them with the OpenCL 1.1 headers. I then switched back to the nvidia OpenCL driver loader and re-meerged pyopencl. Everything now works as expected. At the moment my understanding can therefore be summarised as "if you wish to use pyopencl on a system with NVIDIA hardware it is necessary to compile pyopencl against the OpenCL 1.1 header files."
