Description Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-05-28 07:05:22 UTC
SLIM is not working always

What doesn't work:

* Starting slim via xdm init script
* Starting as root with slim (-nodaemon)

What works:

* Starting with "strace slim -nodaemon"

Where should I start to get more informations?

And of course

startx

works as well
Comment 5 Ian Stakenvicius (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-05-28 14:05:57 UTC
The PAM errors in slim.log concern me.. If I had to guess, I think that slim cannot authenticate the primary root session and therefore is forced to exit.

Do you know what (if anything) is non-standard in /etc/pam.d/ ? the files system{,-local}-{login,auth}, slim, and slimlock would be of particular interest here.
Comment 6 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-05-28 21:26:04 UTC
Perhaps I should at that more description.

It seems that X starts, e.g. the focus moves to vt7 but no slim comes up.
Comment 7 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-02 06:07:28 UTC
If I do startx then the login prompt appears on VT7 which works for logins as long as the second X is running.
Comment 8 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-03 06:47:23 UTC
I rebuilt quite some packages yesterday and now it works. I will reopen if it comes back.

What comes back? You didn't identify a specific issue so any future bug where "slim doesn't work" looks like this one.
Comment 10 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-03 17:00:56 UTC
What is still missing here is what PAM might say about what slim is doing, probably in the syslog.
Comment 11 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-08 08:16:27 UTC
it maybe correlated with #501330. It still comes from time to time, but no clue how to solve it or to debug it.
Comment 12 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-08 11:38:47 UTC
Why did you put the crappiest Summary ever back? It doesn't explain anything.
Comment 13 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-08 11:42:49 UTC

> Why did you put the crappiest Summary ever back? It doesn't explain anything.

And why did you out something wrong into the Summary? Let's place a "?" because nobody knows the root cause
