Description Mark Knecht 2014-05-25 14:17:52 UTC
I updated chrome last night. Now all web pages are black. The browser still appears to work - right click gives a menu, when I hang over some places that are probably links I see the cursor change - however the whole internal part of the browser is just black. When I run it from a terminal I see a lot of error messages

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge google-chrome
2. Use chrome
Actual Results:
black inside of browser

Expected Results:
Should just work. No other versions are in portage so I am unable to go back to what worked before. Why is that?

Some web sites have suggested turning off compositing but I get a black screen trying to do those config changes so that hasn't helped:

I've been searching around on the web. Seems there are others having this problem, and like all I've found so far, I'm unable to fix it. There are a couple of general suggestions:

1) Go to chrome://flags

and/or

2) Go to 'Settings'

Unfortunately both of these are rendered inside of chrome the same way and both come up with the same all black screen.

Looking in portage I see google-chrome-beta and google-chrome-unstable. I'll give them a shot and see what happens.

Also, I tried:

emerge -k =www-client/google-chrome-34.0.1847.137_p1

which was the working version yesterday but it fails with a missing libudev link issue similar to this bug report:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=511020

I really miss my chrome setup in Gentoo but I'm OK as it still works fine in a Windows VM so I'm OK for a few days.

google-chrome-beta-36.0.1985.18_p1 seems to work but all of the link menus are a bit of a mess. None the less no black pages and it's usable.

I'd still like to get to the bottom of what happened with the 35.0.1916.114_p1 version as it looks a lot better to my eyes.

Cheers

Try it with a fresh profile. Move ~/.config/google-chrome out of the way.

If it still fails, file a report upstream. crbug.com

If you discover some way to fix it without recompiling the source code, feel free to reopen this.
Comment 4 Mark Knecht 2014-05-26 13:11:08 UTC
Removing the existing config directory only made things worse. Now both version are black screen. I've not tried putting the config back again. Will try that later. Will also investigate reporting as per your suggestion.

QUESTION: Is there no way to get the previous version back into portage? Or is there an overlay or storage area (attic?) where I can rebuild what I was using last week?

I'd like to try to ensure this problem isn't caused by an xorg update or something else that's changed. It's _very__ strange to me to see a failure like this.
Comment 5 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2014-05-26 17:33:12 UTC
You are welcome to grab the ebuild from the attic. I can't add it back to the portage tree though.
Comment 6 Mark Knecht 2014-05-27 18:28:01 UTC
There is now a bug report on the Chromium site showing this black screen problem across multiple distributions:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=377009

As I report there, our google-chrome-beta works but shows the problem a bit. However our google-chrome-unstable (currently Google Chrome 37.0.2008.2 dev) seems to work fine.

Good thing as I didn't find a good doc to get things from the attic. I should learn that one day I guess.

Anyway, I'm OK for now but somehow the Gentoo management process of declaring things stable failed me in this case. Don't know how that could be improved other than keeping a couple of previous stable versions as we do with most programs.

I am closing this. It's real, but I have a solution and if others run into the same problem they can create a new report.

Find the file you want, click the Download link, plop it in an overlay, and regen the Manifest.

www-client/google-chrome is never marked stable due to the distfile mirroring issue. You probably have it in package.keywords.

For www-client/chromium, we could potentially keep older versions. However, our security team has a policy of removing ebuilds which install software with security vulnerabilities.
Comment 8 Mark Knecht 2014-05-27 19:00:17 UTC
You're correct that it's in my keywords file. If the 34.x.y.z version was removed due to security issues than I completely understand.

Thanks!
