It would be nice to stabilize a newer version of oct2py since there's no python3 support at the moment. I tried to run the tests for any of the available oct2py packages. Currently no ebuild passes the tests - not even the stable version 0.4.0-r1. The test-suites from version 0.4.0-r1 and 1.0.0 won't run on command line for me either. Probably they're flawed. Tests run for version 1.3.0 from command line, but not when using portage. I think some failures are due to interaction problems with X, some are really weird. I don't really understand what's going on there, to be honest. It would be probably a good idea to fix the tests in oct2py-1.3.0 and then stabilize for python3 support in ipython.

Currently working on a patch for the test failures. Please give me some time - It might be that I can fix the problems on my own and provide a patch soon.
In this ebuild draft all tests should pass. https://github.com/cel4/cel_overlay/blob/master/dev-python/oct2py/oct2py-1.3.0-r1.ebuild I've tried to fix the two remaining errors without unsetting the DISPLAY variable, but unfortunately I could not get them working with the virtualx eclass. If anyone has a solution using virtualx - please let me know. Please leave a comment if you spot mistakes!
