I am unable to reproduce on my 4-core Xeon at home (with MAKEOPTS="-j5") but my 8-thread Core i7 (with MAKEOPTS=-j9) sproradically fails the install phase. Furthhermore, the multilib-centric changes being introduced in -r3 seem to have cured this issue, although I can't see any change that deliberately did so.

Jeroen, I believe your title change obscures the main point of this bug report, which is that failures only occur on high-end systems with at least 8 cores. - John

is this still a problem with 2.25.2 ? if so, could you try passing this to elibtoolize in the ebuild: --reverse-deps
