Description Amit Prakash Ambasta 2014-05-12 07:14:50 UTC
Kernel on boot throws a irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

Booting w/o the irqpoll options disables access to USB and renders graphics really slowly even on xterm where there is a noticeable latency between keypress and rendering of the character on the terminal.

Attached are logs against kernel issues and dmesg.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot gentoo
Actual Results:
irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
Lack of access to USB
Sluggish graphics

You are booting your kernel with noapic, what did you expect?
if you have trouble with apic (something strange because your specs show a recent system), look for a bios update from your manufacturer.
But disabling apic on multicpu computer is just wrong.

Hi,

This is the boot entry for linux.

menuentry 'Gentoo GNU/Linux' --class gentoo --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-8757aefb-92e5-4351-8dc0-058b6ae2276f' {
	load_video
	insmod gzio
	insmod part_msdos
	insmod ext2
	set root='hd0,msdos1'
	if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,msdos1 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos1  8c0044bd-b186-413e-83c3-be6b263e7219
	else
	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 8c0044bd-b186-413e-83c3-be6b263e7219
	fi
	echo	'Loading Linux 3.14.3-gentoo-minimal ...'
	linux	/kernel-3.14.3-gentoo-minimal root=/dev/sda2 ro  init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd quiet
}

As you can see, noapic isn't specified. Am I supposed to specify it somewhere else?

This is a bug tracker. When you find bugs you report them here. There is no bug here - it looks like you are looking for support. We have web forums, IRC channels and mailing lists where Gentoo Linux users can get support.
Comment 8 Amit Prakash Ambasta 2014-05-30 06:17:43 UTC
Well booting the kernel with irqpoll or acpi=noirq option restores access to USB and speeds up graphics. This would mean that I am not lacking drivers but its a kernel issue.

Upstream bug @ https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76001 suggests its an acpi_bios.

So you have found a solution to a local problem. Nice.
