To clarify: the gentoo virtualbox guest is broken by installing Mesa-10.1.1 on the *guest* machine. The gentoo host machine (also ~amd64) is already running Mesa-10.1.1 with no problems. When I run startx on the guest machine, gnome-shell complains about no support for 3D rendering and the screen goes black, although the X session continues to run with the black screen until I kill xinit manually. Reverting to Mesa-10.1.0 on the *guest* machine fixes the problem. (The host machine continues to run normally with Mesa-10.1.1, as before.) Xorg.0.log provides no error messages, so I'm stumped. I tried re-emerging xf86-video-virtualbox and virtualbox-guest-additions on the guest machine, but no joy. Anyone else having the same problem? Reproducible: Always

Thanks Jeroen, as always, for supporting gentoo.
