Description Dr Croubie 2014-04-28 22:12:00 UTC
GIMP used to have two flavours, a very nice and usable Linux version, and a completely useless and borderline-unusable windows version.

Upstream developers, in their (un)wisdom, decided to merge the two, but they went the wrong way, and made the Linux version look and act like the useless windows version.
One example of many, you can't even save as a jpg/tiff/png anymore, you're forced to 'export' to jpg and the still get pestered to save as their proprietary GIMP format. That's the MS and windows way, not the Linux way.

I've raised the issue with the upstream developers, and they flat out refuse to make anything that looks like a usable program ever again. Hence I've had package.mask >=media-gfx/gimp-2.8.6 for the last few months.

But now, gimp-2.6.12 has disappeared from the Gentoo tree. Please Please Please bring it back, because I'm a photographer, I need a GIMP that works, and I can't afford $800 for photoshop nor another $200 for windows and more again for another hard disk or two.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge -eva --autounmask-keep-masks world
2.
3.
Actual Results:
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "media-gfx/gimp" have been masked.

Expected Results:
[ebuild R ] media-gfx/gimp-2.6.12

I doubt maintainers will add it back to the tree. Meanwhile you can grab the ebuild here and put it into your local overlay:

Hello!

Version 2.6.12 was released two years ago. I don't expect any more updates to it from upstream. Since we're aiming at not having dead software in the Gentoo main tree, I agree that copying the latest 2.6.12 ebuild to a local overlay of yours is a reasonable approach.

Thanks for your understanding!
