Description ta2002 2014-04-27 20:00:57 UTC
I am probably doing something wrong, but I am certain that some components of the system are not behaving as they should (although I don't have a clue as to which ones those are). :)

Encrypted a (removable) hard drive with the intention of putting zfs storage pools on it:

# cryptsetup -v luksFormat /dev/sdx
# cryptsetup open /dev/sdx disk

Created partitions for the hard drive:

[...]
Command (? for help): p
 Disk /dev/mapper/disk: 732566133 sectors, 2.7 TiB
 Logical sector size: 4096 bytes
 Disk identifier (GUID): xxxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 6, last usable sector is 732566127
Partitions will be aligned on 256-sector boundaries
Total free space is 250 sectors (1000.0 KiB)

Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name

Removed (unplugged), reinserted, remounted, and unlocked the hard drive, but none of the partitions show up:

# ls -al /dev/mapper/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 80 2014-04-27 05:24:20 ./
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 5260 2014-04-27 05:24:20 ../
crw------- 1 root root 10, 236 2014-04-27 05:06:28 control
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       7 2014-04-27 05:24:20 disk -> ../dm-0

# ls -al /dev/dm-0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 253, 0 2014-04-27 05:24:20 /dev/dm-0

Ran partprobe to request that partition tables be re-read:

# partprobe

Not quite what I expected:

# ls -al /dev/mapper/

Side question - should all of the entries in /dev/mapper be links (it appears that the same nodes were created twice)?

I can add nodes (and / or links) manually, but that doesn't get them into the device manager.

After adding nodes partitions 17-44:

# dmsetup ls
st3000p2 (253:2)
st3000p1 (253:1)
st3000p16 (253:16)
st3000 (253:0)
st3000p9 (253:9)
st3000p15 (253:15)
st3000p8 (253:8)
st3000p14 (253:14)
st3000p7 (253:7)
st3000p13 (253:13)
st3000p6 (253:6)
st3000p12 (253:12)
st3000p5 (253:5)
st3000p11 (253:11)
st3000p4 (253:4)
st3000p10 (253:10)
st3000p3 (253:3)

Most of this is new to me, and no doubt there is some way to do this all manually (which I have no idea how to do), but it would be really nice if all of these fancy tools (udev, udisks) could help.
