Description causality 2014-04-22 23:34:03 UTC
Beginning with dev-java/icedtea-7.2.4.5, the "systemtap" USE flag is ignored. With that version onwards, dev-util/systemtap is a required and non-optional dependency when installing via Portage. dev-java/icedtea-7.2.4.3 does not have this problem.

According to the icedtea homepage, systemtap is an optional dependency. They explain it this way: "When using the systemtap tracing support (--enable-systemtap), the following additional requirement apply: systemtap-sdt-devel".

Please see http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/BuildRequirements as a reference for the above.

It appears that this is a bug in the ebuild. Upstream made this a build-time configuration option.

--------------------------

Emerge output:

(note: the behavior is the same even if it is run as
"USE="-systemtap" emerge --pretend dev-java/icedtea")

# emerge --pretend dev-java/icedtea

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

[ebuild N ] dev-util/systemtap-2.4 USE="-sqlite"
[ebuild U ~] dev-java/icedtea-7.2.4.7 [7.2.4.3] USE="-cacao% -jamvm% -zero%"

(note: I currently do not have dev-util/systemtap installed)

Emerge output of older version dev-java/icedtea-7.2.4.3:

# emerge --pretend =dev-java/icedtea-7.2.4.3

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Comment 1 Robert Förster 2014-10-05 22:58:12 UTC
the linked wiki article is true for icedtea 6, but not 7.
on the (currently supported) version of icedtea7, systemtap will be automagically used if its present (--enable-systemtap is gone)
Comment 2 Andrew John Hughes 2014-10-06 13:03:33 UTC
There is no systemtap USE flag anymore for 2.x.
Comment 3 Todd Walter 2014-10-07 01:49:35 UTC
"Used if present" is not congruent with "Pull in systemtap" as a missing dependency. That is unexpected behaviour for what is clearly an optional component. KProbes in kernel config defaults to "N" after all.
Comment 4 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2015-09-01 22:49:11 UTC
I'm not sure whether it is possible to build 7 without systemtap any more but it is a hard dependency in the ebuild and unless gnu_andrew says it's okay, I don't intend to make it optional again.
