Description Thomas Haschka 2014-04-18 14:01:36 UTC
The current build of Blender 2.70a has OSL disabled. OSL is a major feature of blender and should be selectable at least by a USE flag.
Comment 1 Thomas Haschka 2014-04-18 14:06:42 UTC
How to reproduce:

Launch Blender, switch to the cycles engine, create a material, write an osl script and add a script node.. for more details how to use this feature c.f. http://cgcookie.com/blender/lessons/introduction-to-osl-in-blender-cycles-part-01/

when loading the OSL script a message appears that OSL has been disable in this build. It is enabled in the binary provided by upstream.

Comment 2 Julian Ospald 2014-04-18 17:33:59 UTC
can you provide a patch?
Comment 3 Julian Ospald 2014-04-18 17:58:09 UTC
I don't think osl is packaged yet, so nothing I can do here so far.
Comment 4 Julian Ospald 2014-05-10 14:40:08 UTC
if you want to push for this, you have to work on an ebuild and open a new bug requesting inclusion of OSL
Comment 5 Oleg 2014-06-27 15:06:07 UTC
I plan to create ebuild for it but it looks like OpenShadingLanguage has no distributed source packages except git.
Comment 6 Thomas Haschka 2014-06-30 13:48:47 UTC
There are several OSL ebuilds around on the internet.

i.e.
https://github.com/megabaks/stuff/blob/master/media-gfx/osl/osl-9999.ebuild

They might be a starting point
Comment 7 Reuben Martin 2014-07-14 15:26:53 UTC
I don't think OSL and related projects have ever provided archives of their releases. The ebuild will probably need to pull the tagged release from git. I've been building OSL manually and it's a fairly straight forward build.
Comment 8 Julian Ospald 2014-12-24 21:10:19 UTC
we have a live ebuild of blender here
https://github.com/hasufell/media-overlay

if you want to add a cleaned up osl ebuild and add osl support to the blender live ebuild, provide a pull request

Chances this goes into the tree are small right now, but who cares. Ebuild is ebuild.
Comment 9 Jonathan Scruggs (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-06-16 16:32:59 UTC
OSL support is coming to v2.77a ebuilds. A new OSL ebuild has been built and should be added. Sorry for the long wait.
Comment 10 Jonathan Scruggs (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-06-19 14:28:09 UTC
This needs to be changed to adding the osl package to portage as it doesn't exist yet.
Comment 11 Jonathan Scruggs (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-07-13 14:19:27 UTC
This will be added with Blender v2.77a or better. For now, you can try the ebuilds from here (https://github.com/dracwyrm/gentoo-ebuilds) while we perfect them. They change a lot, so be warned on that.
Comment 12 Jonathan Scruggs (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-10-07 07:40:57 UTC
This was going to be added, but can't as OSL only supports LLVM 3.4 and 3.5. There's been talk of supporting new versions, but nothing has come of this. Once there is support for 3.7 and above, this will be added.

Packages like Open Source Radeon drivers need newer versions of LLVM as well as others, so this will prevent people from using OSL.

Closed until newer LLVM support is added. Sorry.
