There is a regression bug with the change to ESP Ghostscript. ps2pdf breaks ligatures, and words like "final" appear as "fi nal" on the generated PDFs. The bug was first described here http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=no&bug=132035 and is already fixed on GNU ghostscript 7.05 (I've checked this myself), but it seems that the fix wasn't propagated to ESP ghostscript. I already notified this bug upstream (see URL). Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to have it in Bugzilla because it took me loads of time to figure this out... Also there is a quick fix for it (described on the debian bug), which works, and probably is a good idea to apply it in the the ebuild.
I just want to add that there isn't a regression on ESP after all. The bug exists on ghostscript 7.05, and I've already added a comment to the ghostscript's SF bug database, bug 524292. For the record, a better workaround for this bug mentioned there is that using ps2pdf13 instead of ps2pdf,ps2pdf11, or ps2pdf12 solves the problem. Perhaps you may wish to close this bug now, as there isn't much one can do besides waiting for this to be fixed upstream...
Okay, I'm going to leave this bug open so that I remember to check it when the next version of eps ghostscript comes out.
I've submitted an ebuild for ghostscript-7.05.4: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6618 Can you please test it to see if it solves your problem? Thanks, -- Thomas.
I've emerged ghostscript-7.05.4.ebuild successfully but the PDF files generated by ps2pdf have broken ligatures, i.e., it's still necessary to use ps2pdf13 to overcome it. I suppose that it still isn't fixed upstream.

Closing, since this one's an upstream problem.
