Description Jonas Stein gentoo-dev 2014-04-17 13:09:59 UTC
http://stardict.sourceforge.net/ states:
"The original StarDict project has recently been removed from SourceForge due to copyright infringement reports. Most of the files were lost with the demise of the project. The project has re-emerged here since then, though the legal issues may never have been resolved."

Is there still a copyright infringement?
Should the official gentoo repository care about this?

BTW: all homepage values in the .ebuilds belonging to stardict lead to this old page.

Reproducible: Always

Why do you bring that up here? Who is supposed to answer your request for comment?

For safety, assigned to the Board of Trustees for them to look into this report.

The only ebuild I can find grepping the tree that depends on stardict is app-text/sdcv-0.4.2.ebuild and that's for tests only [test? ( app-dicts/stardict-quick-ru-en )]

If, in fact there is a copyright issue, I think it would be easy to remove those packages and migrate to goldendict or something else.

Is it possible to obtain further info on this, like what the allegations are specifically? Visiting the sourceforge page doesn't provide much.

Debian is still shipping version 3 and all bug reports I could find have no real conclusion.

Honestly, a website like this seems to amount to little more than rumor. If there is something substantial it might be actionable (RESTRICT=mirror, etc).

Does a website that says foo is in violation of copyright with nothing more (not even a declaration on the part of the person who feels their copyright was infringed) require a response?

Google apparently doesn't have any qualms with distributing the files. They'd take it down in a heartbeat if somebody filed a DMCA request.
Comment 6 Matt Summers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-04-18 16:28:31 UTC
I agree with Rich, nothing we should do without real proof. Further Google hosting it is a good indication that the project is OK.

I'm going to close this bug. Feel free to re-open it if there is real proof of the claims.
