when doing an rsync against rsync.namerica.gentoo.org I noticed the following MOTD:

GENTOO.CHEM.WISC.EDU is no longer an official Gentoo rsync mirror. 

Instead, plese use rsync://rsync21.us.gentoo.org

The new mirror is much faster than the old one.

If you really like it, set your SYNC variable in /etc/make.conf 
SYNC="rsync://rsync21.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

We also host Gentoo source mirrors via FTP and HTTP from
gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/
