When installing handbrake 0.9.9, gst-plugins-base-1.x and friends aren't pulled in if they aren't already installed. In the ebuild for handbrake, gst-plugins-base:1.0 is listed in RDEPEND. Since handbrake would complain about missing plugins when using things such as the preview feature, I installed the 1.2.3 versions manually by issuing an "emerge -1ua gst-plugins-meta" since I already had the 0.10 version installed by other packages. This installed the 1.2.3 version in a new slot. Handbrake works fine afterwards. Even though these packages are needed by handbrake, emerge wants to depclean the 1.2.3 gst-plugin packages. emerge --info: Portage 2.2.8-r1 (default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde, gcc-4.7.3, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_BUNZIP2_COMMAND, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, SYNC, USE_PYTHON Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. On stable system (perhaps with gstreamer-0.10 and plugins already installed), add media-video/handbrake, media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6, and virtual/ffmpeg-9 to package.accept_keywords 2. Add "media-video/handbrake gtk gstreamer" to package.use if the flags aren't already enabled. 3. emerge handbrake 4. Run ghb, load a source file (or DVD), click "Picture Settings", and play the preview video. Handbrake will complain about a missing gst-plugin and won't play the preview. 5. emerge -1ua gst-plugins-meta (or try gst-plugins-base) 6. Repeat step 4. Handbrake should play the preview without complaining about any missing plugins. 7. Run "emerge -p --depclean". Depclean wants to remove all the gst-plugins 1.2.3 packages (if nothing else but handbrake depends on them). Actual Results: Portage doesn't install the gst-plugins-base:1.0 along with handbrake, even though it's listed in RDEPEND. Depclean wants to remove the gst-plugins 1.x packages (if nothing else but Handbrake depends on them). Expected Results: Portage should install the gst-plugins 1.x along with handbrake if they aren't already installed. Depclean shouldn't remove them if handbrake is still installed.

In the ebuild for handbrake, > gst-plugins-base:1.0 is listed in RDEPEND. That is a contradiction; if it is listed there, it gets pulled. If it wouldn't be pulled, that would be a bug in Portage. > Even though these packages are needed by handbrake, emerge wants to depclean > the 1.2.3 gst-plugin packages. Similarly, they wouldn't be depcleaned here then. > 2. Run "emerge -p --depclean". Depclean wants to remove all the gst-plugins > 1.2.3 packages (if nothing else but handbrake depends on them). And this wouldn't happen. > Actual Results: > Portage doesn't install the gst-plugins-base:1.0 along with handbrake, even > though it's listed in RDEPEND. It should. > Expected Results: > Portage should install the gst-plugins 1.x along with handbrake if they > aren't already installed. Depclean shouldn't remove them if handbrake is > still installed. This is what is intended to happen, as well as happens for me. What am I missing? Is -base sufficient or should it be -meta? Do you see this as a Portage bug?
As far as I can see, only base is needed: $ grep gst doc/BUILD-Linux * libgstreamer0.10-dev (gui) * libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev (gui) libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libappindicator-dev * gstreamer-devel (gui) * gstreamer-plugins-base-devel (gui) gstreamer-devel gstreamer-plugins-base-devel And thus: $ grep -r 'libs/gst' handbrake-0.9.9.ebuild media-libs/gstreamer:1.0 media-libs/gst-plugins-base:1.0 Can you try again and correct me, yourself or confirm this is a Portage bug?

Do you see this as a > Portage bug? Doesn't seem to be a Portage bug. I've synced my tree again, and Portage didn't depclean gst-plugins-base:1.0 and other packages like gst-plugins-ffmpeg. But the handbrake ebuild seems to be missing dependencies. I can confirm that handbrake needs the following packages: media-libs/gst-plugins-good:1.0 media-plugins/gst-plugins-x264:1.0 (pulls in media-libs/gst-plugins-ugly:1.0) media-plugins/gst-plugins-a52dec:1.0 And maybe: media-libs/gst-plugins-bad:1.0 What puzzles me is that although I did install the x264 plugin, handbrake still gives me a popup dialog that says that it's missing. But the activity log doesn't show any signs of GStreamer complaining, so I think I'm missing something. The preview window gives me a black screen, but sound plays fine. Handbrake did work fine when I updated all the packages contained in gst-plugins-meta:1.0, so I'm probably missing something that's listed in there.
Seems that is the case, Debian does this too: pkg/linux/debian/control.quantal:Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, gstreamer1.0-libav, gstreamer1.0-plugins-base, gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio pkg/linux/debian/control.raring:Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, gstreamer1.0-libav, gstreamer1.0-plugins-base, gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio And this is confirmed; so, let's do it at Gentoo as well: + media-libs/gst-plugins-good:1.0 + media-libs/gst-plugins-bad:1.0 + media-libs/gst-plugins-ugly:1.0 + media-plugins/gst-plugins-a52dec:1.0 + media-plugins/gst-plugins-libav:1.0 + media-plugins/gst-plugins-x264:1.0 + 26 Mar 2014; Tom Wijsman <TomWij@gentoo.org> +handbrake-0.9.9-r1.ebuild, + handbrake-9999.ebuild: + Revision bump, add more gstreamer dependencies to unbreak parts of the + application; fixes bug #505396, reported by Abigail. Thank you very much for reporting
