Description Andrius Štikonas 2014-03-20 11:05:29 UTC
When I use sys-boot/plymouth-0.8.8-r5 and dracut with systemd module enabled my system is unbootable.
Plymouth is started early in initrd and booting proceeds to normal system and later gets stuck (I suspect when real system does something with plymouth).

If I reboot then boot gets stuck at slightly different point! systemd eventually says that /home cannot be mounted and asks to give a root password. However, /home actually is mounted at that point which is very bizarre. (By the way, I use LVM, not sure if this is relevant)

I would provide more info but not sure what I should provide.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. sys-boot/plymouth-0.8.8-r5
2. Install dracut with systemd module
3. Generate a new initrd.

Please append 'systemd.log_level=debug' to the kernel cmdline, enter root password when systemd will ask for it, save the output of `journalctl -b` and `systemctl -a -l` somewhere. Then attach both files to this bug report. Thanks!

journalctl -b

systemctl -a -l

Unfortunately, I can't even boot with systemd.log_level=debug. initrd system doesn't even ask me for LUKS passphrase.

Sorry, for loads of bug reports over the last few days. It seems that systemd module is still quite new and needs more testing...
Comment 4 Alexander Tsoy 2014-03-21 10:46:59 UTC
"home.mount" service was started before "lvm2-activation-early.service". Obviously "home.mount" should depend on "dev-mapper-lvm\x2dhome.device" and the qeustion is why the latter was considered successfully activated.
Comment 5 Alexander Tsoy 2014-03-21 11:56:28 UTC
Probably something wrong with SYSTEMD_READY udev device property, but I can't say for sure. Could you set udev_log="debug" in "/etc/udev/udev.conf" and attach the journal contents again?

Hmm.. no, it seems LVs do not have SYSTEMD_READY property.

Unfortunately, it's not really helpful. Maybe we can get more useful info if you add LogLevel=debug to the /etc/systemd/system.conf. It should have the same effect as systemd.log_level=debug, but will be applied only after switch root.

journalctl -b with udev and systemd debugging

First of all, if I generate initrd after adding LogLevel=debug to /etc/systemd/system.conf then inintrd fails to even ask for LUKS passphrase. Very strange...

So I first generated initrd and then edited /etc/systemd/system.conf file to workaround the issue above.
Comment 9 Andrius Štikonas 2014-04-06 01:07:57 UTC
I just realized that systemd.log_level=debug does not prevent initrd from working. But there is about 1 minute delay before LUKS passphrase is asked (not sure if this is intentional or not).

In any case I am still dropped to recovery command line when systemd thinks that it failed to mount /home (which actually gets mounted). If I then proceed to boot with systemctl default then system boots but it seems that all devices are not functioning till I replug them, or e.g. in case of network card modprobe the driver. Is this some kind of udev problem? So neither /home nor device drivers are properly loaded...

Is there any other info that I can provide to help solve this problem.
Comment 10 Alexander Tsoy 2014-04-07 21:21:18 UTC
Could you try a newer systemd (>=208.9999)?
Comment 11 Andrius Štikonas 2014-04-07 23:49:44 UTC
systemd-208.9999 works even worse (completely unbootable)
But the good news is that systemd-212 works perfectly for me.

Should we close this bug then?
