Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

2.
3.

Actual Results:

Expected Results:

I thought about closing this bug because it's too "thug". Try to use some proper english when reporting bugs and also the title of your bug is not really appropriate.
Look at the ChangeLog for the reason gnome-icon-theme is included.
Comment 3 Eric Brown 2004-05-10 09:09:18 UTC
This bug is not resolved. There are plenty of people who do not want icon-themes installed when they are not necessary. I checked the changelog for the ebuild and for GTK+-2.4.1, adding the icon-theme deps is not necessary. GTk+-2.4.1 only needs GLib, libtiff, libpng and libjpeg.

Please add use flags for the icon themes, as some of us don't even use them (you could even add a local use flag).

Can you understand my English now?
Comment 4 James Kyte 2004-05-10 09:15:01 UTC
I agree with this, why does it need >=x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-1.2? While I use many gtk-based apps, I do not have Gnome installed. Reasoning?
Thanks

ebuild with added gnome USE flag

Just my hack, b/c I have no ebuild experience.
Comment 6 Yi Quang (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-10 15:37:51 UTC
#3, This bug is not resolved because it is not a bug to begin with. The gnome-icon-theme is included as a DEP to give gtk (filechooser specifically) a default theme to fall back to, and it really has no gnome dependencies (check the dependencies of gnome-icon-theme).
We are aware of what GTK needs and doesn't need.

Sigh, marking as INVALID again.

#6, from http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80839#c3 :
... It is a dependancy of gnome and gnome apps however. ...
Comment 9 Andreas Plesch 2004-06-16 15:24:43 UTC
Unfortunately the original report was not ideal in its reporting but we have to
stick with it now because new reports will be marked as duplicate of this one.
I found this bug because I was surprised to see that upgrading from gtk+ 2.2 to
gtk+ 2.4 lets gnome-icon-theme show up as new and heavy dependency, 2.7 MByte
in size. I understand that the (probably new) file chooser needs some icons but
that does not mean that I want -all- of the gnome icons. I need gtk+ only for
the gimp and have already plenty of icons installed. Would it not be better to
have no icons for the chooser by default ? And add a gnome-icon-theme
dependency to gnome-base/gnome where it should be anyways (it may be there
already) ? I assume that the file chooser compiles without icons.
Please reopen, at least for discussion. Thanks.
Comment 10 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-17 00:42:50 UTC
No, it would not be better to have no icons by default. I have laid out in a related bug (#50085) what i see as a viable solution, but I don't have the time to investigate it nor do I think it's high priority. Unless someone comes up with more than the same old there is nothing to discuss here.
Comment 11 Andreas Plesch 2004-06-17 16:04:03 UTC
I looked at bug #50085 and see that you suggest to have basic mime/icon data
come with gtk+ itself. That would solve the problem. Or have a minimal
gtk-icon-theme package. Thanks for responding and no need for harsh words :)
Comment 12 Andreas Plesch 2004-06-17 16:14:27 UTC
Just a note for people in a similar situation: Unmerging gnome-icon-theme
does not appear to affect the gimp at all.
