Description Andrei Slavoiu 2014-03-06 09:06:25 UTC
After unmerging openldap I get:

!!! existing preserved libs:

--sort-common is not an argument option for --as-needed. This would explain how it links against libldap and liblber, but it doesn't yet explain where that was injected (xerces-c sources do not mention either).

net-misc/curl's curl-config does look like a likely candidate for this behaviour.

Please attach the entire dev-libs/xerces-c build log to this bug report.
Comment 2 Andrei Slavoiu 2014-03-06 21:34:54 UTC
Looks like the ldap library was picked up because of being built with curl[ldap]

Even when built with the default LD_FLAGS the problem persists:

`ldd` is recursive and doesn't proof anything. `objdump -p <file> | grep NEEDED` or `scanelf -n <file>` or even `lddtree <file>` but, not don't use
`ldd` like this!

futhermore, combinining --sort-common like that with --as-needed breaks libtool handling:

http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/eclass/ELT-patches/as-needed/2.4.2?view=markup

as you can see, it's only parsing -Wl,--as-needed, not eg. -Wl,--as-needed,--foobar, so you have to use separate -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--sort-common

and bug 498396 is almost certainly bogus as it would break our handling of leaving .la files for static libraries that don't have alternative ways (pkg-config files) or no deps, I left it open for a second opinion from a toolchain developer before jumping the gun

it's certainly not anykind of Tracker you an dump every random overlinking issue, sorry

nothing in this bug indicates so far this is valid, close ->

Yes, but that linkage probably originates in a different package built with the bad LDFLAGS, like net-misc/curl maybe, so you could keep reopening this bug report until you go blue in the face, but the problem is still yours to fix, not a generic bug in Gentoo. Rebuild your /entire/ system with valid LDFLAGS and then see if the problem is gone.
Comment 7 Andrei Slavoiu 2014-03-09 01:09:14 UTC
Ok, I humored you, I rebuilt world with the default LDFLAGS, nothing changed. Now could you please check this on your system and acknowledge there is a problem?

I don't have this problem at all. I don't think Samuli was seeing it either. I guess we both tried.
Comment 9 Andrei Slavoiu 2014-03-10 14:28:27 UTC
And stil I can reproduce the issue on my work desktop as well. This one runs the stable branch and never had any custom LDFLAGS set. It already had curl[ldap] installed, I just intalled xerces-c on it for testing.

Created attachment 372576 [details, diff]
xerces-c-3.1.1-as-needed.patch

I guess this might help.
Comment 11 Andrei Slavoiu 2014-03-14 11:20:26 UTC
Indeed, after adding the patch and a call to elibtoolize to the ebuild I have this:

objdump -p /usr/lib/libxerces-c.so | grep NEEDED
  NEEDED libcurl.so.4
  NEEDED libicuuc.so.52
  NEEDED libpthread.so.0
  NEEDED               libstdc++.so.6
  NEEDED libm.so.6
  NEEDED libc.so.6
  NEEDED libgcc_s.so.1
