Not really a bug, but rather an annoyance. That could be... well... annoying when debugging GNOME in the unlikely case the GNOME desktop doesn't start ;-) So, when connecting to an Xsession from GDM with TWM installed, I've noticed that the desktop background isn't refreshed. Moving windows or opening/moving menus quickly garbage screen. I've checked that starting an Xsession from XDM rather than GDM properly refreshes the desktop background. If useful, one noticeable difference is that, when connecting from GDM, the desktop background is the same grainy background than the GDM login screen, whereas when started from XDM, it's simply plain black colored. I am sure I have seen this with 3.8 too in some situation (I don't remember the WM I was using that time :S), could you report it to upstream too? -> bugzilla.gnome.org (I don't think we will be able to do much for fixing it downstream :( )
I remember gnome-shell/gdm 3.12 introduced some changes to background handling some time ago. In my case I see no issue for now neither :/
